Tours and Lectures

click to enlargeThe Australian National Herbarium (ANH) as part of the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research (CPBR) has over the years run many tours and public lectures. The herbarium collection is generally closed to the public, however occasional open days provide an opportunity to speak to our botanical staff and take a behind the scenes look at the herbarium collection. Open days are generally held in conjunction with large scientific promotional events such as Science Festival.

Guided tours are occasionally run for community groups, societies and tertiary educational institutions. These tours are focused on showing groups how a herbarium collection operates, the importance of herbarium specimens and botanical information. For more information about herbarium tours please see our tours policy.

The CPBR occasionally runs public lectures in conjunction with either CSIRO Plant Industry or the Australian National Botanic Gardens. These are advertised in the Canberra Times and on our website for the weeks leading up to the presentations. Past lecture series have included Biodiversity Bites, which involved four lectures on current CPBR research and information developments.

2007 Report

Open days were held for Science Week 19 & 20 August 2006 in association with the ANBG's Nursery also being open to the public. About 170 people were given tours of the Herbarium during the weekend.

A public lecture 'Naming Australia's Biodiversity - it matters' was held on 22 August 2007 to commemorate Linnaeus' 300th birthday. Guest speakers from around the country spoke on the past, present and future with respect to plant and animal names.

Throughout the year student groups for the local universities and TAFE colleges were given tours of the Herbarium.
