Plant Enquiry Service

public requesting plant specimen IDThe Australian National Herbarium provides identification of plant and fungal specimens and advice on most botanical subjects. Enquiries are replied by letter, office form or phone. Some specimens may need to be referred to experts elsewhere, in which case you will be advised.

Lodging Specimens

Specimens should wherever possible be brought in person to the Visitor Centre during open hours (9.30 - 4.30 every day except Christmas Day). If this is not possible, specimens may be posted once they have been pressed and air dried. Specimens once identified can be collected from the Visitor Centre.

The first ten specimens per month from one client are identified for free. Larger batches can only be accepted by specific arrangement and may attract a charge of up to $23.00 per specimen for identification.

For regular collecting, or for occasional trips where a lot of material is being gathered, please contact us and we will issue you with a CPBR collecting book.

Permits are required to collect plants in certain areas, particularly in reserves. Permit procedures differ, but details can be obtained from the wildlife management authorities (usually National Parks and Forestry Services) in your state or territory.

2008 Report

The ANH provides botanical information and identification services to the general public and to professional and commercial clients. All enquiries received are logged and tracked by the Curation Coordinator. In excess of 300 public and internal identification enquiries were received and dealt with during the period, as well as numerous email (logged) and phone (unlogged) enquiries.

Email enquiries are handled jointly with the Australian National Botanic Gardens (often the same enquiry is sent to both) and average about 20 per week.
