| Thallus grey-white to pale creamy yellow, to 7  cm wide, 0.3–0.5 mm thick, deeply cracked and areolate; areolae plane,  irregularly shaped to angular, usually with a rough surface, lacking soredia  and isidia; prothallus absent. Photobiont cells 8–10 µm wide. Apothecia subimmersed  to sessile and ±constricted at the base, irregularly rounded or auriculate, scattered  to crowded, 0.8–2.0 mm wide; disc red to red-brown, ±glossy, epruinose, plane  to convex; margin distinct at first, red, glossy, persistent or excluded with  age. Exciple colourless to red, K+ red. Epihymenium 12–15 µm thick, orange-red,  K+ purple-red. Hymenium 35–45 µm thick, colourless to red-brown, K–. Hypothecium  pale brown, 200–300 µm thick, K–; subhypothecium colourless to pale brown, to  50 µm thick, K+ yellow → red. Paraphyses usually unbranched, 1.8–2.0 µm thick;  apices slightly swollen, 2.5–3.0 µm thick. Asci 30–45 × 10–12 µm. Ascospores  ellipsoidal, 8–9 × 3.0–4.5 µm. Conidia filiform, curved, 20–25 × 0.5–1.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K–, C–, P–, UV+ yellow; medulla K+ red, C–, P+ yellow; containing lichexanthone (major), norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor or trace). Apothecia K+ reddish purple; containing russulone (major), norrussulone (trace). | ||
| Common on siliceous rocks in sunny, exposed habitats in moist areas of Qld and northern N.S.W.; at altitudes to 1100 m. Also in New Zealand. | ||
