| Thallus olive-brown, consisting of confluent or  scattered areolae, not delimited by a prothallus; areolae glossy, bullate, 0.1–0.3  mm wide; isidia and soredia absent. Photobiont cells 9–14 µm wide. Apothecia sessile to subimmersed,  round to subirregular, scattered or confluent, 0.5–1.0 mm wide; disc red-brown  to dark brown, ±plane to strongly convex, epruinose; margin thin, usually paler  than the disc, glossy, persistent or excluded with age in convex discs. Exciple  40–70 µm thick, inspersed with yellow-orange to orange pigment, K+ reddish  purple. Epihymenium c. 10 µm thick, inspersed with orange to red-brown  granules, K+ reddish purple. Hymenium 50–60 µm thick, ±orange in the upper  part, colourless below. Hypothecium 100–150 µm thick, colourless to pale  yellow, K–; subhypothecium colourless, K–. Paraphyses simple or occasionally  branched, 1.0–2.5 µm thick; apices tapered or rounded, not noticeably swollen.  Asci 40–50 × 9–13 µm. Ascospores fusiform to narrowly  ellipsoidal, 7–10 × 2–3 μm. Pycnidia  not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecium, K–; containing secalonic acid A (major). Apothecia K+ reddish purple; containing russulone (major), norussulone (minor). | ||
