| Thalluscrustose, leprose, white, bright green, greenish grey or whitish grey, usually diffuse, rarely delimited, forming extensive continuous irregularly spreading patches to 8 cm wide, sometimes becoming partly detached from the substratum. Margin sometimes with delimited sublobes 0.5–1.0 mm wide, ±raised at margins, covered with granules (to 400 μm thick). Soredia fine to coarse, dispersed or forming a thick continuous layer, ±globose, 20–70 μm wide, or aggregated in roundish consoredia to 400 μm wide, usually with long projecting hyphae to 100 μm long; sometimes the projecting hyphae lacking on exposed parts of the thallus surface. Medulla white, conspicuous, to 1 mm thick. Hyphae 1.5–5.0 μm thick. Lower surface white, formed by lower part of the medulla; tomentum not apparent.Photobiont cells ±spherical, 7–20 μm diam. Hypothallus sometimes apparent where the lower surface is free from the substratum, pale brown. | This cosmopolitan species is very common mainly in temperate Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); grows on soil banks, rock overhangs, mosses, bryophytes and the base of trees in most forest and woodland habitats. Also known from Norfolk Island, Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and New Zealand. | ||
