| Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, subirregular, subirregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; occasionally developing laciniae towards thallus centre, sublinear-elongate, subdichotomously branched, 0.5–1 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, flat, very shiny towards lobe apices, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe apices blackened; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, cylindrical, not inflated, becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface shiny, rugulose and dull in thallus centre, pale brown to chocolate-brown, often darker towards lobe apices; rhizines very sparse to scattered, simple, often tufted, robust, concolorous or darkening. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, to 5 mm wide; disc shallowly concave becoming undulate-distorted, pale brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thick and involute at first, persistent, isidiate. Ascospores 6–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia very rare, immersed. Conidia 4–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then pale red, C-, P-; containing atranorin, hypoconstictic acid (minor), hypostictic acid (major) and ±hyposalazinic acid (trace). | ||
