| Thallus foliose, adnate, to 9 cm wide. Lobes moderately imbricate, irregular, subirregularly branched, 1–2 (–4) mm wide; apices often subrotund; occasionally developing laciniae in thallus centre, markedly imbricate, irregularly branched, 0.5–1 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, flat, dull, emaculate, smooth; thallus centre becoming cracked and areolate, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe apices shiny, black-margined. Lower surface mostly smooth, brown to dark brown, becoming brown-black at lobe margins; rhizines sparse, grouped subapically, simple, often tufted, robust, concolorous. Apothecia subpedicellate, to 7 mm wide; disc shallowly concave, becoming undulate-distorted, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, crenulate, persistent. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia minute, immersed, punctiform. Conidia 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ yellow-orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, norstictic acid (major), salazinic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor) and consalazinic acid (minor). | ||
