Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 4 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, crowded, irregular, subirregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey, flat, shiny towards lobe apices, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, soredia lacking; lobe margins blackened at apices; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, globose, becoming cylindrical and inflated apically, then becoming coralloid; isidia apices epicorticate, intact. Lower surface shiny, rugulose, medium brown to dark brown, often brown-black at lobe apices; rhizines very sparse, simple, tufted or not, robust, concolorous or darkening. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, to 4 mm wide; disc irregularly concave, becoming undulate-distorted, pale brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thick and involute at first, isidiate, persistent. Ascospores 8–9 × 4.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia common, immersed, punctiform. Conidia 4–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), salazinic acid (major), constipatic acid (minor), protoconstipatic acid (minor), connorstictic acid (trace) and consalazinic acid (trace). | ||
