Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, irregular, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, flat, becoming dull, emaculate, smooth, without soredia; lobe apices shiny, black-margined; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, globose becoming cylindrical and inflated especially at apices, sparingly branched or rarely becoming coralloid-branched, with apices epicorticate and intact. Lower surface shiny, pale buff to pale tan, often slightly darker towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse, simple or occasionally tufted, robust, short, concolorous or darkening. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then pale red, C-, P-; containing atranorin, hypostictic acid (major), hyposalazinic acid (minor) and 4-O-methylhypoprotocetraric acid (minor). | ||
