  Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 1–8 cm wide. Lobes contiguous to imbricate, flat, irregular, short and rounded, 1–3 (–4.5) mm wide. Upper surface yellowish brown to red-brown or dark olive-brown, paler at lobe apices, dull throughout or slightly shiny and slightly pruinose at lobe apices, smooth to weakly rugose or pitted at lobe apices, becoming cracked and weakly rugose in centre; isidia globose, bursting at apices, often proliferating to form deep cushions. Lower surface dull, smooth to rather rugose, black, often paler at lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense, simple, to 0.5 mm long, black. Apothecia uncommon, sessile, to 3.5 mm wide; disc flat to concave, dark brown; thalline exciple with pustulate isidia. Ascospores 7–9.5 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia slightly curved and fusiform to weakly bifusiform, 4–7 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose-red, P-, UV-; containing glomelliferic acid (major), glomellic acid (minor), loxodellic acid (minor) and ±perlatolic acid (trace).
     
  Rare in S.A.; also occurs in New Zealand and Macquarie Is. Grows on rock or, rarely, on wood.
