| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, forming rosettes to 1–5 cm wide. Lobes often imbricate, ±separated near thallus margin, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously branched, 0.7–2 mm wide, without lobules. Upper surface pale yellow, convex, dull, maculate particularly towards lobe apices, smooth, neither isidiate nor sorediate; lobes not black-margined, often pale blackish brown near apices. Medulla white. Lower surface partly canaliculate, brownish yellow or grey-brown; lobe margins yellow; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple or rarely sparsely branched, 1–2 mm long, black. Apothecia very rare, subpedicellate, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; disc weakly concave to ±flat, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, entire, involute, crenulate. Ascospores 6–7 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ brown, C-, P+ orange-red; containing usnic acid, fumarprotocetraric acid, ±succinprotocetraric acid, ±protocetraric acid (trace) and ±physodalic acid (trace). | ||
| Widespread and common, on soil in drier areas of W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; also on the South Is. of New Zealand (central Otago, Canterbury). | ||
