Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate, to 6–14 cm wide. Lobes commonly imbricate, flat, irregular to sublinear-elongate, di- or trichotomously or irregularly branched, 0.7–2 mm wide; apices ascending or not. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, with distinct effigurate maculae, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins commonly brown or black. Medulla white. Lower surface rugulose or not, black; rhizines sparse, simple, 0.5–1.2 mm long, black. Apothecia sessile, 4–10 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown, often with radiating fissures; thalline exciple with effigurate maculae. Ascospores 6–8 × 3–4 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, 4-O-methylhypoprotocetraric acid, notatic acid, ±hypoprotocetraric acid (trace), ±isonotatic acid (trace), ±subnotatic acid (trace) and ±4-O-demethylnotatic acid (trace). | ||
Common on rock throughout southern and eastern Australia (W.A., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.); rare on both islands of New Zealand. | ||
