Thallus foliose, very loosely adnate, with centre lobate, to 6–9 cm wide. Lobes densely imbricate, flat, linear-elongate, subdichotomously branched, divaricate in places, becoming suberect and exposing black lower surface, 0.5–1 mm wide. Upper surface yellow to yellow-green, becoming brownish and/or blackening after long storage, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins black. Medulla white. Lower surface rugose, jet black; marginal lobe apices brown; rhizines absent or very sparse, simple, robust, short, black. Apothecia sessile, 1–3 (–10) mm wide; disc concave, chestnut-brown, darkening; thalline exciple entire, thick, involute, becoming thin and subentire. Ascospores 6–10 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia numerous. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then pale reddish, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, hypostictic acid (major) and hyposalazinic acid (minor). | ||
Usually found scattered on exposed, acidic rock in areas of moderate rainfall in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W. and Tas.). | ||
