  Thallus foliose, unattached or loosely adnate, forming rosettes to 4–6 cm wide. Lobes loosely imbricate, sublinear, subirregularly to subdichotomously branched, narrow at apices (0.7–1.5 mm), wider at base (to 6 mm); lobules in thallus centre, extensively branched, ascending, subterete to cylindrical, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, sometimes tipped with black at apices. Upper surface yellow to yellow-green, convex, glossy or dull, emaculate, smooth becoming rugulose, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins often black. Medulla white. Lower surface ±canaliculate, shiny, rugose, shallowly faveolate, pale brown to tan; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, tufted or branched, ±dichotomously or palmately branched, brown to black. Apothecia not seen in Australian material. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bifusiform, 5–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then orange, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, stictic acid (major), constictic acid, norstictic acid (minor), cryptostictic acid (trace) and with or without associated unidentified compound (trace).
     
  Scattered on arid soils in mallee areas of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., Vic. and Tas.); also on the South Is. of New Zealand and in South Africa.
