Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, to 7–10 cm wide. Lobes densely imbricate, ±forming a rather thick mat, flat, sublinear-elongate, dichotomously to irregularly branched, 0.5–1.5 (–2) mm wide. Upper surface greenish yellow, shiny, distinctly to effigurately maculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobes often black-margined particularly towards apices. Medulla white. Lower surface rugulose or not, black; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, robust, black. Apothecia subpedicellate, 2–5 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple maculate. Ascospores 6–8 × 4–5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, diffractaic acid (major), barbatic acid (minor), 4-O-demethylbarbatic acid (trace), obtusatic acid (trace) and norobtusatic acid (trace). | ||
Very rare, endemic, on exposed rock in temperate to subarid areas of S.A., N.S.W. and Tas. | ||
