| Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 5–10 (–15) cm wide. Lobes barely imbricate or not, flat, sublinear, irregularly branched, 1–2.5 mm wide; apices ±round. Upper surface pale yellow to yellow-green, darkening, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older lobes becoming rugulose, sometimes becoming transversely or irregularly cracked and rarely areolate; lobe margins often black. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to brown, often darker towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, slender, 0.2–0.3 mm long, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, 1–5 (–8) mm wide; disc concave then undulating, dark brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, involute, becoming thin and slightly lacerate. Ascospores 12–13 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ intense yellow; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid, ±constipatic acid and ±protoconstipatic acid. | ||
| Common on rock from dry sclerophyll forests of southern Australia to arid grasslands and ranges of central Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; also on the South Is. of New Zealand, and in the U.S.A. and Mexico. | ||
