| Thallus adnate to tightly adnate, to 5 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, irregular, not constricted, irregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide; occasionally developing narrower (0.5–1 mm) sublinear-elongate laciniae; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale yellow-green, darkening with age, convex, dull, emaculate, lacking soredia and isidia; older lobes becoming rugulose and eventually irregularly cracked and areolate; lobes often with black margins. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, rugose, black or very rarely partly dark brown, paler near margins; rhizines sparse, simple, robust, short, black. Apothecia sessile, to 8 mm wide; disc deeply concave, becoming flat and distorted, dark brown; thalline exciple thin, crenulate to deeply incised. Ascospores 11–13 × 7–8 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ orange-red; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid (major), ±constipatic acid and ±4-O-methylhypoprotocetraric acid. | ||
| Relatively common, scattered on exposed rock in subarid and arid areas of W.A., S.A., N.T., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas. (Bass Strait). Also on rock in montane tropical areas of Papua New Guinea and drier areas in New Zealand. | ||
