| Thallus small-foliose to subcrustose, very tightly adnate, to 1–3 cm wide. Lobes sparingly imbricate, ±contiguous to widely separate, flat, linear-elongate, dichotomously but sparingly branched, 0.2–0.7 (–1) mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening to deep olive-brown or blackish in older lobes, dull, emaculate, often developing transverse cracks in older lobes and becoming areolate, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface black, brown towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse, short (c. 0.1 mm), rudimentary, black. Apothecia common, sessile, 0.5–1 mm wide; disc concave then ±flat, dark brown to black; thalline exciple smooth, involute, entire, becoming ±crenulate. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia elongate-bifusiform, 7–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, constictic acid (major), stictic acid (faint trace), norstictic acid (faint trace), connorstictic acid (± trace), ±cryptostictic acid (trace) and ±atranorin (trace). | ||
