| Thallus foliose, unattached, to 2–6 cm wide. Lobes strongly convolute, contorted, elongate, sublinear, sparsely dichotomously branched, 3.5–8 mm wide when flattened, 1–4 mm wide when dry and convoluted; marginal and laminal lobules sometimes present in older lobes. Upper surface pale yellow-green, darkening in older central lobes, dull, emaculate, smooth, becoming rugulose and cracked in older lobes, without soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to dark brown; rhizines very sparse, simple, concolorous. Apothecia rare, shortly pedicellate, to 4 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple thick, crenulate, incised, markedly involute, becoming less so. Ascospores 10–11 × 6 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and consalazinic acid. | ||
