| Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, flat, subirregular, elongate, irregularly branched, constricted, 1–3 mm wide; laciniae overlying thallus centre, sometimes becoming dominant, subdichotomously branched, 0.4–1 mm wide. Upper surface yellow-green, becoming greyish, dull or shiny, emaculate, ±smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobes with distinct black margins. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, black, brown-black at lobe apices; rhizines sparse, simple, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, 2–4 mm wide; disc concave, cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple thin, strongly involute, becoming crenulate and lacerate. Ascospores 7–10 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor), hypostictic acid (minor/trace) and hyposalazinic acid (trace). | ||
