Thallus loosely adnate, coriaceous, to 10–20 cm wide. Lobes irregular, 5–20 mm wide; margins crenate; apices rotund; cilia moderately dense to dense, conspicuous, simple or bifurcate, 3–6 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey, dull, emaculate, smooth or becoming rugulose towards thallus centre, without isidia; soralia mainly marginal, linear, sometimes spreading submarginally, with marginally sorediate lobes becoming involute; soredia farinose. Medulla white, in part pigmented orange-red adjacent to lower cortex. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, slender, to 6 mm long. Apothecia rare, subpedicellate, 3–10 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple sorediate. Ascospores 10–12 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bacilliform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red, P-; pigmented lower medulla K+ purple; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, alectoronic acid (major), a-collatolic acid (major or minor) and ±skyrin. | ||
A common species, growing on bark in moist forests of temperate and tropical eastern Australia (Qld and N.S.W.) and Norfolk Is. Also known from North, Central and South America, Sri Lanka, West Africa and India. | ||
