Thallus adnate, coriaceous, to 5–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, subirregular, 2–8 mm wide; margins crenate or irregularly incised; cilia simple or branched, 0.5–3 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, flat, emaculate, smooth or becoming rugose; cortex fragile; isidia laminal and marginal, short-cylindrical, becoming coralloid, granular or occasionally dissolving into soredia, apices often ciliate. Medulla white in upper part, but yellow-orange towards lower cortex. Lower surface black, with a brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines dense, simple, slender, to 1 mm long. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; upper medulla K+ yellow, C-, P+ orange, UV-; lower medulla K+ violet; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, stictic acid (major), constictic acid (minor), euplectin (minor, in pigmented medulla), cryptostictic acid (trace), norstictic acid (trace), ±menegazziaic acid (trace) and ±connorstictic acid (trace). | ||
A scattered endemic species in eastern Australia (Qld, Vic. and Tas.). Grows on bark and rock. | ||
