| Thallus adnate, rosette-forming or spreading, to 3–5 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, subirregular, 2–5 mm wide; margins shallowly crenate, shiny, black; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey, smooth, dull, rugose and shallowly foveolate in centre, lacking soredia, pustules and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, with longitudinal wrinkles and ridges, black, with brown marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, black. Apothecia common, subpedicellate, 1–5 mm wide; disc concave, red-brown; thalline exciple smooth or rugose. Ascospores 12–14 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia common, scattered. Conidia bacilliform, 7–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, ±caperatic acid and with or without unidentified fatty acids. | ||
