Thallus tightly adnate, to 2–5 cm wide. Lobes crowded, imbricate, subirregular, 1–2 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface pale grey to leaden grey, smooth or sparsely pitted at first, becoming rugose, sometimes obscurely maculate around submarginal foveolae, lacking soredia, pustules and isidia; usually shiny and with granular white pruina towards lobe apices. Medulla buff. Lower surface ivory to pale brown, with pale brown marginal zone; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple or tufted, concolorous. Apothecia common, sessile, 1–2 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flattened, epruinose, dark brown; thalline exciple densely pruinose. Ascospores elongated ellipsoidal, straight or commonly curved, 16–20 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia numerous, immersed or slightly emergent. Conidia bacilliform to almost fusiform, commonly curved, 9–11 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and scabrosin 4,4'-diacetate. | ||
