| Thallus lobate, expanded, frond-like, 5–25 cm tall, attached by a rooted holdfast; lobes developing from a stalk 1–2 cm tall. Lobes broadly rounded, 2–4 cm wide, ±imbricate at apices, rarely discrete, often fenestrate or torn, ±continuous centrally; sinuses prominent; margins entire, sinuous, occasionally notched or ragged, rarely secondarily lobulate, thickened below. Upper surface pale grey-green to pale fawnish when dry, lettuce-green to olive-green when wet, undulate to unevenly pitted, punctate-impressed to subfaveolate in parts, thick, tough, coriaceous; without isidia, maculae, phyllidia or soredia. Photobiont green. Lower surface pale tan to dark brown or black (especially near stalk), costate above stalk and often ridged, bullate or subfaveolate, thinly and evenly tomentose from margins to centre. Cyphellae rounded, minute to large and prominent, 0.2–2 (–4) mm diam., rather shallow; margins thin; pit membrane white. Apothecia scattered, rare to occasional or absent, sessile, 0.5–2 mm diam.; disc matt, red-brown to reddish orange; exciple crenulate, concolorous with disc or paler. Ascospores fusiform-ellipsoidal, 1–3-septate, 22–28 (–33) × 8.5–10 µm, colourless. |  |

| Recorded twice from N.S.W. in the nineteenth century; apparently extremely rare. Also in Lord Howe Is. Widespread in New Zealand. | ||
