Sticta fuliginosa (Dicks.) Ach.

  Methodus 280 (1803); Lichen fuliginosus Dicks. (1795). T: Cader Idris, Wales, Aug. 1726; lecto: J.J.Dillenius, Hist. Musc. t. XXVI, fig. 100A (1742), fide J.R.Laundon, Lichenologist 16: 218–219 (1984); typo: OXF 100A.

Thallus ±monophyllous, often deeply indented-incised and appearing polyphyllous, rather loosely attached centrally, 2–12 (–15) cm wide. Lobes broadly rounded to somewhat ragged-lacerate, (0.5–) 1–5 (–8) cm wide, folded to ±imbricate centrally; margins broadly rounded, entire to shallowly indented, thinly ridged below and often rolled under, commonly densely isidiate. Upper surface pale glaucous grey, suffused brownish when dry, livid slate-grey to blue-black when wet, shallowly to deeply wrinkled or subfaveolate, smooth to scabrid-areolate, rather papery, isidiate, maculate, rarely phyllidiate. Isidia minute, styliform, brown-black, glossy, granular-coralloid, very delicate and friable, in clusters at margins and on thalline ridges, often forming a sooty diffract crust, rarely developing into small flattened phyllidia or into small secondarily attached lobes. Maculae minute, white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface pale creamish white to buff, rarely brownish centrally, conspicuously wrinkled-ridged to ±bullate, densely tomentose from margins to centre. Cyphellae common, plane to crateriform, 0.5–5 mm diam., very large and prominent centrally, minute at margins; pit membrane white. Apothecia not seen.

Occurs in eastern Qld and N.S.W., Vic. and Tas., on tree trunks and shrubs in humid shaded habitats; mainly montane, at altitudes of 200–1110 m. A cosmopolitan species that is especially common in temperate areas.
