Thallus erect, elongate, hollow, often twisted and occasionally fissured or perforated, often forming large colonies; anastomoses common. Fertile branches 3–5 cm long, 1.7–2.5 mm wide, often slightly basally constricted; axils often perforated; branching pattern irregular to almost isotomic-dichotomous, particularly in more terminal branches; shorter lateral branchlets common, scattered along the margins. Upper surface greyish green to pale grey, sometimes almost white, smooth or slightly areolate to somewhat wrinkled above the apothecia. Medulla hollow. Apothecia terminal, often becoming ventral due to continuing growth of the main branch, then with a slightly constricted base, 1.2–2.5 mm wide. Mazaedia apically, subapically or usually ventrally exposed, not enclosed by a thalline receptacle that ruptures early. Ascospores 5.5–7.5 µm diam., dark grey. Conidia bacilliform, 4.5–6 (–7) × 1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K+ yellow, P+ orange (reactions often more distinct at branch tips or apothecia); containing sphaerophorin, stictic acid, constictic acid and norstictic acid. | ||
