| Thallus slender, erect, repeatedly and usually richly branched, forming small tufts or patches or large colonies. Fertile branches narrowly compressed, sometimes broadly flattened towards the base, rarely partly subterete near the apothecia, 2.5–6.5 (–11) cm long, 1.5–3 (–5) mm wide. Upper surface pale bluish grey to greenish grey, rarely almost white (in exposed situations) or dark greenish grey (in deep shade), smooth. Apothecia terminal, usually ±as wide as the branch, 1.5–3 (–4.5) mm wide; thalline receptacle small, ±smooth. Mazaedia oriented subapically to ventrally; thalline receptacle rupturing early. Ascospores (5.5–) 6.5–7.5 (–9) µm diam., hyaline to dark grey. Conidia bacilliform, (4–) 4.5–5.5 (–6.5) × 1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K+ yellow, P+ orange; containing placodiolic acid, sphaerophorin, stictic acid, constictic acid, norstictic acid (trace), ascomatic acid (trace), isousnic acid (occasional trace) and an unidentified pigment produced in the mazaedium, visible as a vivid blue spot on the TLC plate. | ||
| Common in cool-temperate rainforest in Tas., rare in Vic.; also in N.S.W. and Lord Howe Is. Primarily an epiphyte, but occasionally on soil and rock. Also in Chile and New Zealand. | ||
