  Thallus thin, whitish to dingy grey. Apothecia lecideine, jet-black, matt to rather glossy, to 1.5 mm diam.; margin persistent, often flexuose; disc plane to convex, epruinose. Excipulum hyaline to pale olive-brown within, with an opaque heavily pigmented outer layer to c. 40 µm thick, olive-black, greenish black to purplish black, unchanged or intensifying greenish black in KOH. Epithecium dark olive-brown, unchanged in KOH. Hymenium very densely inspersed with oil droplets to 15 µm diam. Hypothecium hyaline to pale brownish. Paraphyses simple, with olive-brown apices. Ascospores narrowly fusiform to acicular, bent, simple or occasionally spuriously 3–7-septate, 35–80 × 3–6 (–7) µm, with attenuate often needle-like apices. Pycnidia black, superficial or immersed, c. 0.1. mm diam. Conidia 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Atranorin is sometimes present in trace amounts.
     
  Widespread and common in Tas.; also in Vic., New Zealand and New Caledonia. Occurs in cool-temperate rainforest and wet-sclerophyll forest where it grows on smooth bark, especially on Atherosperma and Pomaderris.
