This is one of two Australian native plants in a series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra.

Plant: Banksia marginata

Family: PROTEACEAE

Common-name: Silver Banksia

Variable plant, depending on origin, from rounded shrub to 4m diameter with dense growth, to sparser tree-like plant to 6m.
Leaves are also variable and silver on the underside.
Yellow cylindrical flower spikes to 9cm appear from spring to autumn.
Distribution: NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas, SA.
Propagation: From seed.
Cultivation: Very hardy with good drainage. Tolerates some shade. Dense forms make good screen plants.
