Millar, Alan James Kenneth ('Al')   (1957 - 2022)

Born on 21 August 1957, died on 1 October 2022.

Alan J.K. Millar was an Australian phycologist specializing in the taxonomy and systematics of marine algae, particularly from the southwestern Pacific and Southeast Asia.

He was a Principal Research Scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.

He published extensively on various aspects of marine algae, including new species descriptions and studies on algal biodiversity in different regions.

He was Editor-in-Chief of 'Phycologia', published by the International Phycological Society Council.

At his funeral in Macedon, Victoria, Nicholas Yee, his workmate and student sent a tribute, remembering him:

"Exploring the NSW far south coast, jumping in and out of the water at remote locations surveying for new seaweeds. . .
As a student, Alan and his family were always so generous with invitations to bbqs on their back deck at Rosebery.
I remember Al as a master storyteller and he could always recount moments to make you laugh.
One of my funniest memories of Al was of a trip to Rottnest Island. I can still picture him riding a bicycle from one dive location to the next, still wearing all his dive gear and tank."
