Born on 21 August 1957, died on 1 October 2022.
Alan J.K. Millar was an Australian phycologist specializing in the taxonomy and systematics of marine algae, particularly from the southwestern Pacific and Southeast Asia.
He was a Principal Research Scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
He published extensively on various aspects of marine algae, including new species descriptions and studies on algal biodiversity in different regions.
He was Editor-in-Chief of 'Phycologia', published by the International Phycological Society Council.
At his funeral in Macedon, Victoria, Nicholas Yee, his workmate and student sent a tribute, remembering him:
