Gullan, Paul K. (1947 - )
Born on 13 December 1947 in Bairnsdale, Victoria.
In the 1970s he was involved with "surveying and recording vegetation communities in minute detail across the state" for the National Herbarium of Victoria.
The ASBS Newsletter of June 1977 comments on the Melbourne Chapter's regular talks:
"Floristic Mapping in Victoria" Dr. Paul Gullan, National

Paul's talk provoked much
discussion on the problems of vegetation mapping of an area
the size of Victoria.
Paul Gullan established
the Flora Information
System (FIS), a substantial
database for plant records
and information, in the
mid-1980s.
In 1992, botanists of the Flora Survey Group,
stationed in the Soil Conservation Authority
building in Kew (Vict.) (and previously Treasury
Place and National Herbarium of Victoria
at the Royal Botanic Gardens), relocated
to the Arthur Rylah Institute for
Environmental Research (ARI) and formed the Flora Section.
(The survey group was
originally led by Paul Gullan
and, while Paul didn't
transition to ARI he
had considerable involvement
in the development of
the Flora Information
System (database).
The Flora
Information System
was ultimately
incorporated into the
Victorian Biodiversity Atlas.
Paul retired from government employment and was involved with the establishment of the non-government Viridans Pty Ltd, located at Bentleigh East, Victoria, Australia:
"Viridans is a leader in the provision of accurate and authoritative information on the distribution, morphology, taxonomy and conservation status of plants and animals that live and breed in the wild in south-eastern Australia.
"The company was established in December 1990 when we began development of the Victorian Flora Information System (FIS) series of botanical databases. These databases were the first to allow a user to employ interactive maps to find all plants in a specified area, to display colour images and descriptions of each species and plot any one of them on state-wide or regional maps."
Paul's earliest herbarium specimens are 1970 and continue until 1997.
