Churchill, Steven Paul (Steve)   (1948 - 2023)

Born in 1948; died on 9 January 2023.

He was Bolivian Program Director for the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Steve's long career at Missouri Botanical Garden began in 1996 and continued until his retirement in 2020.

Steve's main interests were to contribute to the knowledge of the mosses of the Andean countries of Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia, and to build capacity for the study of mosses, in particular in those countries.

He shared his knowledge by building in TROPICOS a robust database that contained more than 70,000 collections of mosses and hepatics of the Andean countries.

He published many scientific papers and five books:

'A revision of the moss genus Lepidopilum (Callicostaceae)' (1988),

'Diversity and Conservation of Neotropical Montane Forest' (1995),

'Catalogo de las Briofitas de Bolivia: Diversidad, Distribucion y Ecologia' (2009),

'Glosario ilustrado para musgos neotropicales' (2014),

Familias y Generos de los Musgos de los Andes Tropicales (2020).
