Trichothelium meridionale P.M.McCarthy & Kantvilas subsp. meridionale

  Thallus forming small round or irregular patches, pale greyish green to pale green, smooth, matt to slightly glossy; prothallus not apparent. Algae Phycopeltis; cells subglobose, angular-rounded or shortly rectangular, not forming radiating plates. Perithecia superficial, hemispherical to subglobose, 0.15–0.29 mm diam., greenish black to jet-black, matt; apex slightly flattened to rounded; setae (0–) 4–6 (–12), narrowly acute or bristle-like, uniformly black. Involucrellum contiguous with and extending to the base of the exciple, greenish black in thin section. Exciple c. 15–18 µm thick, greenish black. Centrum 0.11–0.2 mm wide. Asci elongate-cylindrical to elongate-obclavate, 75–100 × 9–14 µm. Ascospores elongate-fusiform, oblong or ±bacilliform, 7-septate, 28–48 × 3–5.5 µm; perispore not apparent. Pycnidia not seen.   Endemic to southern Tas. where it grows on living fronds of the fern Blechnum wattsii and on cladodes of the endemic conifer Phyllocladus aspleniifolius in Eucalyptus obliqua-dominated wet forest.
The only other Australian species with 7-septate ascospores, T. alboatrum, has soft mainly acute setae that are usually decurved and partly or completely whitish.
